Sri Kanchi Kamakoti peetam and our school. Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Sankarachariya Swamigal, 68th Peetathipathi of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Petam, otherwise called as "Maha Periava" was instrumental for the birth of our school in 1993. The authorities of Sri Kasi Viswanathar Temple at Odiampattu Village near Villianur agreed to make available some land in their possession at Odiampattu for the school. The Government of puducherry accorded permission to utilize the lands for the purpose. Jagadguru Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Sankaracharya Swamigal blessed the establishment of this school and it started functioning from the academic year 1994-1995.

VEDAM –It’s Importance
Vedic Dharma (Apaurusesya or Non-Human) has no specific known beginning and it is considered timeless. Veda is the breathing air of Lord Eswara. The mantras, which struck the consciousness of Rishis in their meditation, took the form of Vedas.
Veda Vyasa, the expositor of the Vedas, mastered the Vedic Texts derived from various Rishis, and arranged them in a set of four. He collected the Vedic texts of prayer under the Rig Veda, the Vedic texts of rituals under the Yajur Veda, the musical form of the Vedic texts under the Sama Veda and such of the Vedic texts that dispelled dangers and annihilated enemies under the Atharvana Veda. It was because of his typological classification of the Vedas that he came to be known as Veda Vyasa.
The Vedas were essentially preserved by an oral tradition for the first couple of millennia and Vedic smrities were handed down from generation to generation by word of mouth without changing orginal sound. This oral tradition has been preserved through a hoary tradition of preceptor and disciple through generations.
“The Vedas” is a Vriksha (Tree), whose roots are the Vipras (Brahmins), the repository of the Vedas. The six Angas, the auxiliary sciences, Siksha (Phonetics), Vyakaranam (grammar), Chandas (metre), Niruktha (Etymology of words), Jyothisha, (Vedanga Jyotisha) and Kalpa-Sutra (texts dealing with the procedure, etc., for the performance of Srouta and smartha karmas, Karmanushtana), are the branches. The Karmanushtanam and the Dharmic way of life are the leaves. All possible efforts, therefore, should be taken to protect and preserve the ROOTS (i.e., give all possible support to the repository of the Vedas) as, once the roots decay, there will be neither the tree nor the branches and leaves. Preservation of the ROOTS are our inherent duty to safe guard this vast heritage which has been passed on from one generation to another from time immemorial.
“If we, of this generation, create a break in the chain of Vedic study, kept up for ages, from generation to generation, we shall be conmmiting the unforgivable crime of denying our descendants the opportunity of learning the Vedas…” – Says Parama – Pujyasri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Mahaswaminaha of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam.
This Vedic tradition, the root, on which this large vata-vrksha of human civilization has prospered, has to be preserved and nurtured. It is not a question of why or for what. It is the only duty ordained to us for our future generation. This great fountain head of all traditions has to be continued through preservation of the mantra-dhvani and utilizing it for the performance of the srauta and smarta rituals. World will remain alright if Vedam is maintained properly.South india has been the refuge and home of Vedic and Sastraic Learning for Several Centuries. Such a big capital is being lost in recent years Maha Periava worried much over this and wanted that every one of us should take all efforts to maintain that India is Veda Boomi. Bharathi has written as Vedam Nirainda Tamilnadu.
Kanchi Maha Periava's Directions:
Maha Swamigal whom we worship as MAHA PERIAVA the 68th Peetathipathi of Kanchi Sankara Mutt, On the occasion of his Shashti Aptha Poorthi Celebration at Chennai has said like this “If there is no Veda, where is the need for the “Mutt” or for a Pontiff? Therefore, I ask you to direct this enthusiasm (in arranging, showering gold (Kanaka Abshishekam) the festival to mark the ascension to “Peeta”) by doing everything necessary for the preservation of Vedas, form committees, frame rules and arrange for funds for achieving this objective. It does not matter,if the preservation of Vedas cannot establish a living for life today, but your work will certainly go down in the annals of history as a lifelong service for the generations to come. Under the auspices of a cooperative movement, from village to village, please start classes to impart one hour daily the Adhyayana of Veda Mantras and their application in life, to boys commencing from their eighth year, for ten years. This is the real shower of gold for me, festival etc. Nothing is possible without hard work. I have therefore taken up the subject of Veda. I can talk to you about my work. Preservation of the Vedas is that work”.
Veda Studies:
At the patasala, students are taught the Vedas from its basic level. It takes atleast Eight years of dedicated study to gain expertise in the Vedic text upto Kramapata of any one of the four Vedas. Those who pass the test in any one of the Vedic text upto the kramapata are known as Kramapaati. A further two years study of Vedas in Jata, Ghanam forms earns one the title of Ghanapaati and two more years study of Lakshana form (where each syllable of a word is given emphasis) earns one the title of Salakshana Ghanapaati.Seven more years of study of the Bhashya ( Meaning and interpretations of Vedas) makes proper training in all the Vedic texts. Thus, one can become a veteran in the study of Vedas in a span of Nineteen years.
Sandhyavandanam, Souriya Namaskaram, Rudram, Sookthams are to be taught to Bramin Students atleast one hour each day and this can be done if parents decide that Veda knowledge should be imparted to their children. It is more important that we shoul not let Vedapatasalas to be closed because of financial difficulties. Maha Swamy directs as “Send your Children to Veda Patasala. Give possible Donation, Send money for the Study of Poor Male Children in Veda Patasala. Veda Rakshanam is your Duty”.
Students are required to undergo periodical in-house tests and once every year they are examined by highly qualified Vedic Pandits from the Kanchi Mutt to ensure their recitation skills. At times His Holiness Himself conducts such tests.
Evaluation is based on the following marks procured by the students in such tests.
98% and Above : First Class
Between 90% to 97% : Second class with Warning for future improvement.
Veda Patasalai - Maha Periava Quotes:
Jagadguru Sri Maha Periava Says that “Dharmam is religion and its principle and practice are promisively described in Chaturdasa ie 14 authoritative books. Sri Eswar is described as Chaturdasa Vidhya Swaroopam. That 14 are 4 Vedas, 6 angas and the other 4 are Meemamsa, Nyayam, Puranam and Dharmasastra. Knowledge is bound only in this 14 Vidhyas. All these 14 Vidhyas were taught in India ie Nalanda, Dakshaseelam Universitites several hundred years ago.
Once named as ChaturVeda Mangalam then as Vedapuri and later turned to be Pondicherry and now as Puducherry had such a privilege of possession of Chaturdasa Vidhyasalai ie University at Bahoor according to 5 copper plates dated AD 868 ie 1200 Years back”.
Maha Periyava's Dream: A Vidyasala at Puducherry
It was the wish of Sri Maha Periava that such a Vidhyasala is to be started again at ChaturVedamangalam now known as Puducherry. Sri Jagadguru Sri Jayendra Saraswathy Sankarachariya Swamigal of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam has fulfilled His dream into reality and accordingly a Veda Patasala was started by the Sadapthi Trust during 2006-2008 and after continued efforts the same was reopened from 2017.
This Patasala is named as Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Veda Patasala with the Veda Vakyam “Vedo (A) Kilo Dharma Moolam”. As its Logo Word

Veda-adhyayana is a duty (sva-dharma) imposed on us by Eswara. Vedadyayanam is Mantra Yoga. It is our very birth-right and we are sastraically qualified to receive it. Neglect of sva-dharma is sure to cause disturbance in our lives. The only prayaschitta for this neglect of duty is to help those children who undergo Adhyayana.
Corpus Fund:
Currently our VedaPatasalai has one Vedic teacher and 10 stdents. The trust spends around Rs.6,00,000/- per annum towards teacher’s fees, boarding and lodging and other administrative expenses to run the Vedic institution. Thus it costs the trust around Rs.50,000/- per student every year.
In the long run, a noble institution like this should not be dependent on commercial organizations for its day to day survival. Hence the trust proposes to create a corpus fund of Rs.100 Million (ie., US $2.5 Millions) to make this Vedic institution self supporting and autonomous.
The objective is to increase the student body strength to 50 and the teaching faculty strength to 5 within few years, with the help of such a corpus fund.
